In Galway, The Sun Brings Music to the Streets

14 Mar

I think it’s little surprises like this that make people fall in love with this town. One minute I’m at home getting ready to watch a movie, the next I’m watching this cool band playing some covers on the street.

Prince – Kiss

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Fortunate Son

Tom Waits – Telephone Call From Istanbul

Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love

Rock Covers in Piano by Scott D. Davis

25 Jun

It’s cover time again! This time I present you Scott D. Davis, with some great arrangements for piano of some well know rock songs. These 3 are my favourites, but check out his Youtube channel for some more:

Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine

Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters

Evanescence’s My Immortal

Enjoy!

12 More Awesome Music Covers

1 May

After the enourmous success (well, not really) of my list of 12 cool music covers, here comes the sequel, with 12 more. Most of them are suggestions from friends that were quick to point out how I had missed some obvious ones. Kudos to them! And with all the suggestions, plus the ones I keep finding randomly, I already have a few extra, so a 3rd installment might be coming soon (feel free to send more suggestions).

Cake – I Will Survive (originally by Gloria Gaynor). I don’t even know how I missed this one in the first list, because I really like the song, especially Cake’s version. And if you’re curious to know how does it sound in Czech… here it is :)

KT Tunstall – Walk Like an Egyptian (originally by The Bangles). You might not recognize the band or the song name, but you’ll probably recognise it imediately after the first few words.

Johnny Cash – Personal Jesus (originally by Depeche Mode). The Marilyn Manson version is also good.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQcNiD0Z3MU

Dave Matthews – All Along the Watchtower (originally by Bob Dylan). One of those songs “covered” by just about everyone.

Editors – Feel Good Inc. (originally by Gorillaz).

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtpGzbdeAfk

Silence 4 – A Little Respect (originally by Erasure). A Portuguese band makes a beautiful version of a somewhat silly song, with all those eighties’ “disco sounds”…

Ben Harper – Sexual Healing (originally by Marvin Gaye). Again, the removal of the synthesizer just made the song so much nicer.

Alanis Morissette – King of Pain (originally by The Police).

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShZd6SxdaZk

Muse – Feeling Good (originally written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1965 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd, says Wikipedia). Another one of those that has been transformed shitloads of times.

Michael Andrews and Gary Jules – Mad World (originally by Tears for Fears). You might recognise it from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

Emil Bulls – Take on Me (originally by a-ha). Also, the video has hot chicks.

Guano Apes – Big in Japan (originally by Alphaville). Another one of those that I can’t believe I didn’t include in the first list. And the original was so unbelievably bad…

“Stand By Me” Around the World

29 Apr

I love covers. Even to the point of compiling a list of them. And this is probably one of the best, and more elaborate, I’ve seen. It’s Stand By Me (originally by Ben E. King) played all over the world, with multiple instruments and vocals perfectly combined.

The song comes from the award-winning documentary Playing For Change: Peace Through Music. Their version of Bob Marley’s One Love is also worth watching.

12 Awesome Music Covers

31 Mar

It’s often said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. And for people like Weird Al Yankovic and Richard Cheese, it’s also a hell of a good way to make loads of money and have a good laugh. Anyway, every once in a while I come across a great cover of a song I love, or a song that I like and only later find out that it’s a cover of some terribly (and sometimes also terrible) old song. So I decided to put together a list of some great covers found on Youtube. I focused on covers done by relatively well-known artists and the great covers made by the “average Joes” will possibly be featured in a future post.

So, without further ado, enjoy this list of 12 awesome music covers:

Korn – Creep (originally by Radiohead). If there is a song that has been “covered” a lot of times, that’s “Creep”. And this Korn acoustic version is amazing!

Nelly Furtado – Crazy (originally by Gnarls Barkley). Also try this video, you might not get the dreadful “This video is not available in your country.” message.

Travis – Baby One More Time (originally by Britney Spears). It’s cool to see how a terrible song turns into something decent just by being playing differently.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NwqN-xj9Xs

KT Tunstall – I Want You Back (originally by The Jackson 5). KT Tunstall is like one-girl band.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xANiW9yWvGE

David Fonseca – Rocket Man (originally by Elton John). A great song (and also an impressive video) by this Portuguese artist.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icB6yOkphz8

John Frusciante – How Deep is Your Love (originally by Bee Gees).

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkqOPGXgkEk

Amnesiac Quartet – I Might Be Wrong (originally by Radiohead). And, as always, Radiohead’s video is sooo weird.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-790ehxSs20

Manic Street Preachers – Umbrella (originally by Rihanna). There’s a huge number of covers for this song. Take a look at this Youtube playlist.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JohzXpM-vkU

Alanis Morisette – My Humps (originally by Black Eyed Peas). Now this is a big change… And by the way, the video is a parody done as part of some Estonian video competition.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W91sqAs-_-g

Natasha Bedingfield – This Love (originally by Maroon 5).

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-LjlEyyjl4

The Kooks – Kids (originally by MGMT). Does anyone else think that MGMT’s videoclip is just… creepy?

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBLT_Fxu6rk

Nouvelle Vague – Blue Monday (originally by New Order)

PS: Sorry for the low quality on some of the videos, but I keep being hit by the ”This video is not available in your country.” message.
